Stories are a great way to teach children about social skills and abstract virtues. When these stories are read and reread, the child is getting a mental map for new or tricky situations. Ask the child questions that put them in the story to really get full benefit. For really touchy subjects, you might want to ask the question one person removed from the child’s self.
“What should Daddy (you) do if this happens to him?”
“Has this ever happened to someone you know? ( or you? )”
