Thankful For….

There is much missing from our life during this pandemic. We feel the absence of family and friends. We have missed holidays, camping trips, a wedding, school buildings, concerts, museums, Utah, road trips, hockey games, playdates, dinners, etc. Besides the bigger memory makers – we also miss normal things like playground stops after school pick-up, restaurant dates while kids are at hockey practice, stopping at the zoo for a quick hour without a reservation, perusing library shelves, kids playing outside with friends without masks…

In the shadow of what others have lost, we are very fortunate and then some. We have had the healthiest year of each of our lives. Skye has not had a croupy night since last April. Hallelujah! We have all had more time to explore new things – guitar, documentaries, drawing, bird watching, reading, donut making, gardening, hiking…. Here is what we feel thankful for this freezing, frigid, February morning.

I’m thankful for my woodsy neighborhood – the 4 miles of hilly, golf course trails I can walk, my library system that has curbside pick up, Skye’s preschool in the woods and her adventurous teachers, and for K and B’s amazing teachers who have made virtual school a personal and enriching experience. In no particular order, I’m also grateful for vaccines, grocery delivery, starry night skies, my personal great horned owl buddy, headphones, and Disney plus.

We all feel very blessed. Here are all of their answers to the question – “What are you thankful for during this pandemic?”

Skye – “Wild Haven (school). Berkeley. Sadie (babysitter). My Christmas Trapeeze. Alexa (smart speaker:). Gigi & Cleo (cats). Story Spot.”

Katahdin – “Bird watching. My teachers. Scouts. Cats. Guitar. Kerbal Space Program. “

Berkeley – “Audiobooks. Cats. Climbing. Ms. Emily (dance teacher). Books. “

Phil – “Yard. Internet. Phones. Gym in the basement. Guitar Lessons. Max. “

Super (annoyed) Gigi
McClure donuts
Blurry Christmas Trapeze
Masked Wild Haven hikers.
Katahdin bird watching on 10 mile hike on North County Rail Trail.
Sisters doing a buddy climb, so Berkeley can help Skye hop down wall properly.
The climbing gym has done a great job with covid precautions. It has been a great reason to leave the house.
Leaves for months and sisters. This is right before Berkeley steps out of the pile with a huge brown spider on her leg 🙁
Dress up buddies and Jugarella.
We have a great yard for apple shmear. Apple shmear is the game you play with the apples left over from apple picking after you have made three apple pies, as well as canned both apple butter and apple sauce. Each kid wanted to pick a bushel. That was a lot of apples, but apple shmear was also a lot of fun and I’m sure the deer appreciated it.
Ninja line was our summer addition and the trampoline, which came with the house, has been well used. Horseshoe pits in the top right corner were excavated in June from under a decade of leaves, poison ivy, wine berries.
