Hike – North Country Trail

Road Trip – Day 15

I had never heard of the North Country Trail (NCT) before last month when I saw a picture slideshow my mother in law made of her visit to see spring flowers. It was one of those scary moments when I realized I both didn’t know everything and thought that I did.  How could I not have known about this huge trail system?!  The NCT is a trail that extends from the New York/ Vermont border to mid-North Dakota – 4,600 miles spanning 7 states!!  My head is still spinning that I didn’t know about this.  Phil’s childhood home is literally ON the NCT.  I’m aghast.  Time to hike.

We did a 1 mile hike today with Cookie on the NCT just a few miles from her home and saw lots of interesting things.  We hiked to Indian Rock across Hippie Bridge.  I cannot for my life figure out how to rearrange these pictures so they are in order.  Enjoy the disorder.

Fresh water clam shells live and dead were found.

Deer tracks on the path.

Our hiking party is not always happy-faced campers. Arguing about who gets to lead or hold hands with Skye is usually the issue, as it was today.

Hiking with my kids on a green trail makes my heart happy.

Cute orange/pink mushrooms in fallen ash log.

“Oooww! Baby mushroom! Hi baby!” said Skye.

Skye inspecting an ash snag along the trail. Full of bug holes and trails, bark all fallen off, but still standing 50 ft tall.

More fun fungus.

We didn’t measure the holes or see to their bottoms, but they are at least 6 inches deep. The circles are perfect and the rectangle nose is really square.

Bug holes and tracks. Emerald Ash Borer Beetle Cookie assumes.

Fort next to the Indian Rock. Seems like a 8-16 year old’s paradise up there.

Indian Rock. What do you think it was used for? Skye and Berkeley think it was used to make pretend food…cookies, yogurt and eggs specifically.

Making pretend cake in the Indian rock right eye socket.

After she was done comforting the fallen tree she said, “I ride it?”

Funky Fungus.

“I’m sorry fallen tree.” She was really struck by the fallen trees. I guess they do look kind of traumatic. She stopped by this one for a few minutes communing.

Fallen tree hugger.

“I’m sorry,” “What happened mom?”

Fallen Fungus.

More fine mushrooms. Berkeley has been a self appointed Fungus Finder since she was two.

Mushrooms are pretty cute.

Skye wasn’t going to miss her turn on the “fwing”.

Berkeley begged to go down to the foot swing we noticed on the hike in. We didn’t jump in the big creek, but it was still super fun.

Katahdin was, as always, our pack carrier. He takes it upon himself to pack and carry all our snacks, water, first aid, and camera. I’m so thankful he does that now.

Making chocolate milk in puddle.

Skye loves puddles since they are rather rare in Utah.

Puddles are for stomping.

Thanks for the fun hike Cookie.
