Road Trip – Day 13
When traveling with Skye, you have to tell her where she is going. Sometimes the destination isn’t better to her than home. She loves to be home. She also wants to know if it’s a “big drive” – 2 hours or more – or a “little drive”. Today was a big drive to not home. She wasn’t happy.
When we left Niagara Falls en route to Phil’s parents house in PA, Skye just wanted to go home. “No Cookie’s house! Go home!” She cried anytime she remembered we weren’t going home. The big kids tried to watch a Marx Brothers’ movie in the car, and Skye wasn’t allowing it. Screaming and throwing toys, then asking for more toys to throw.
Halfway though the trip, I was talking her through all the fun things we love to do in PA – eat cookies, take a bath, swim, hike, swing. The only thing that made her pause her tantrum was talk of the orange kitty, Sunny. It calmed her down every time. “I go see him,” she would say as she nodded her head. That would hold her about 5 minutes until we had to talk her through it again. Thinking about animals and being able to pet them is her happy place. We had a container of snails in the car that she liked to hold during stops.
She loves animals – live ones, stuffed ones, diorama ones… Sunny is such a sweet cat who comes almost every time he is called and tolerates her toddler adoration. I’m thankful for Sunny.
