Both the kids love music and dancing. All kids do, right? We are so fortunate to have found the State Ballet of Rhode Island, a family run ballet since 1960. It is a breath of fresh air in a dance world full of pop music and competitive recitals. Their ballet school is a charming one room studio in a converted barn on their family compound in the woods of Lincoln, RI.
Katahdin at first balked at being the only boy in a ballet class. He danced in an all boys creative dance class last year and at Festival Ballet the year before that. He asked to attend a few of his sister’s classes last summer and he really enjoyed them. Come sign ups for this year, he said he wanted in. He is now in Beginning Ballet with 7 girls ages 6-9. His class had their first parent share day of the year and he was all smiles and so proud of himself. He asked to be signed up for another term. I’m so proud of him. He does 5th position totally backwards half the time and it is adorable.
Forgive the poor quality pictures, I brought the wrong camera and he moves fast. Notice how he is staring right at me in most pictures. He wanted to make sure I got pictures.
Whoops. I did not get one single picture of Berkeley that didn’t include other girls in her class and I want to respect the studio privacy policy. But she loves it. She wants to be a ballerina when she grows up. She practices at home and will be so sad to leave Miss Ana’s dance class when we move. I hope we find another lovely place to dance, but if not, they will take the year off in Texas. Maybe horseback riding will be a nice substitution?
